This logo of Kalingayan identifies to the Odia community having the intensions to enhance the dignity of humanity, society and culture. It sharply means that to be a good human begins, to make a good society and to explore its own cultural expenditions. The recorded history of Odisha began in the third century B.C with the invasion of Ashoka into Kalinga. Kalinga during time had a territory extended frome Ganga in North to the river Rishikulya in the South. The history of Odisha also began with the Mauryan rule over Kalinga in the ancient Odisha. According to two Rock Edicts of Ashoka found at Dhuli, near the Rock Edict. From that period, the modern Odisha was identified as Kalinga. So, simply Kalinga means Odisha and Yana means people of that territory.
In the logo the motif of Navagunjara has been incorporated. The concept of Navagunjara appears in the odia Mahabharat and is a creation of Sarala Dasa, the Odia poet of the fifteenth century. The creation of such a mythical animal has been done in order to impress upon Arjun the form of Krishna in a novel way, other than the repeated forms in which Krishna has appeared in epics and Puranas.
Nanagunjara is accepted as the incarnation of Jagannatha. NavagunJara is a mythical animal consisting of several forms of human and anilmas. In this fantastic composition are the head of cock, the hump of a bull, the neck of a peacock, a tiger, a horse, an elephant and a snake, holding a chakra in a woman hand. Such motifs are quite common in the reliefs of Khandagiri and Udaygiri caves and in the reams of Mugal Paintings. Saral Dasa might have also developed a them out of these motifts/elements in his great creation Mahabharata.
